WordPress Development

Built to be worked on later

Sites, stores and custom functionality on WordPress – built so the next person to touch them, whether that is us, your team or someone else entirely, can understand what is going on.

The service

Most WordPress problems are inherited, not caused.

A site gets built quickly, then extended by three different people over five years. Twenty plugins do the work of four. Nobody knows what the custom code in the theme does, so nobody updates it, so eventually it breaks or gets compromised.

We build to avoid that: fewer moving parts, custom work written into a child theme or a small plugin rather than scattered, and documentation for the parts that are not obvious. It costs slightly more on day one and considerably less over the following three years.

  • Fewer plugins. Each one is a dependency, an update risk and a performance cost.
  • Update-safe. Custom work never lives where the next theme update overwrites it.
  • Documented. What was built, why, and where it lives – handed over in writing.
  • Editable by you. Content your team can actually change without calling a developer.
What we build

Six kinds of work, from a single page to a full platform.

Business and brochure sites

Fast, accessible sites structured around what you actually sell, with content your team can maintain.

WooCommerce stores

Product catalogues, payment and shipping integrations, and the checkout work that decides conversion rates.

Custom themes

Built from your design rather than bought and bent into shape, with no page-builder bloat underneath.

Plugins and integrations

Custom functionality, and connections to CRMs, payment gateways, ERPs and internal systems.

Multilingual and multi-region

Local-language sites and regional variants set up so search engines and readers both know which is which.

Rescue and hardening

Slow, broken, hacked or abandoned sites audited, cleaned, secured and brought back under control.

How we work

Six steps, with a staging site from day one.

01

Understand the job the site does

Who visits, what they need to do, and what counts as the site working. A site that looks good and converts nobody is a failed project with a nice screenshot.

02

Plan the structure

Pages, content types, navigation and URL structure agreed before anything is built – because changing this later is where budgets go.

03

Build on staging

Everything constructed on a staging environment you can see and comment on as it goes, rather than a reveal at the end.

04

Test properly

Devices, browsers, forms, payments, speed and accessibility checked before launch – not reported by your customers afterwards.

05

Launch with redirects mapped

On a rebuild, every old URL is mapped to its new home so the search authority you have built up comes with you.

06

Hand over and document

Credentials, documentation and a walkthrough for whoever maintains it. You are not required to keep us to keep the site running.

What changed about building sites

Your site now has two audiences.

Then

A website was built for people, and for search engine crawlers that mostly read the same page a visitor did.

Now

AI systems read your site to decide what your business is and whether to name it. Clean markup, structured data and unambiguous descriptions of what you do are no longer polish – they are how a machine knows you exist.

A site that only humans can understand is invisible to the thing your buyer just asked.

The deliverable

What you own at handover.

Everything needed for someone else to take over, whether or not that someone is us.

  • The live site, on hosting in your name
  • All source code and custom work
  • Documentation of what was built and why
  • Staging environment and deployment notes
  • Every credential and account
  • A walkthrough session for your team

No licences held on our accounts, no code we keep hold of, no dependency on us to make a text change. If you want to move to another developer, everything they need is already in your hands.

Who this fits

Built for sites that have a job to do.

This is worth paying for where the site generates enquiries or revenue, integrates with something else, or has to be maintained by a team over years.

Honest note: if you need a simple three-page site and nothing more, a good template on decent hosting will serve you well and cost far less. We will tell you that rather than quote for a custom build you do not need.

  • Businesses whose website generates real enquiries or orders
  • Companies on a site nobody can safely update any more
  • Stores outgrowing an off-the-shelf setup
  • Organisations needing integration with internal systems
  • Teams that want to manage their own content
  • Anyone whose site is slow, insecure or already compromised
Questions we are asked

The things worth knowing before you start.

Do you use page builders?

Only where the client genuinely needs to build new layouts themselves and understands the trade-off. Builders are convenient and heavy – they slow sites down and they lock your content into their format. Where we use one, we say so and explain what it means for you later.

Can our team update the site afterwards?

That is the point of building it the way we do. Content, images and most page structure are editable without touching code, and the handover includes a walkthrough for whoever will be doing it.

Do you offer ongoing maintenance?

Yes, as a separate arrangement – updates, backups, monitoring and small changes. It is optional. Plenty of clients take the handover and maintain it themselves, which is a perfectly good outcome.

Can you work on a site someone else built?

Frequently. We start with an audit so you know what is actually there before committing to anything – occasionally that audit concludes a rebuild is cheaper than the repairs, and we will say so.

How long does a build take?

A straightforward business site: three to six weeks. A store or custom functionality: six to twelve. The variable is almost always content and approvals rather than development.

What about hosting?

We will recommend hosting suited to the site, opened in your name and on your billing. We do not resell hosting, so the recommendation is based on what the site needs rather than on margin.

Tell us what the site has to do.

Send us the current site if there is one, and what is not working about it. We will come back with an honest view of whether it needs fixing, extending or replacing.
